Like Clouds
Translated as “Like Clouds” by Rina Kikuchi and Carol Hayes

the line of beetles passes greenly through the orchard
crawling along the underside of the leaves they multiply over and over
disgorging mucus from their nostrils
it becomes the blue mist
from time to time they
disappear into the sky soundlessly flapping their wings
women with inflamed eyes
gather up the unripe fruit
the sky has myriad scars
hanging loose like elbows
and then, I watch
the orchard splits right down the middle
and from that crack, the bare ground, burning like clouds, appears

Translated as “Like a Cloud” by Sawako Nakayasu

Insects pierce green through the orchard
Crawl the undersides of leaves
Ceaselessly multiplying.
Mucous expelled from nostrils
In a blue mist.
At times, they
Without a sound, flutter and vanish into the sky.
The ladies, with bleary eyes
Gather the unripe fruit.
The sky has countless scars.
Hanging like elbows.
And then I see
The orchard cleaving from the center.
The skin of the earth emerges there, burning like a cloud.
